Rejection is why a lot of small businesses fail.
Fear of rejection is the #1 reason why so many small businesses, including Avon businesses, fail in the first year. You would think it was a lack of money, recruits or customer, but actually that’s not the case. Once you solve your rejection problem, a lot of other issues, like not having enough recruiting prospects, will fall into place along side it.
You have reluctantly talked to your closest friends and family members, but the only one that supported you and your business was your Mom. Sound familiar?
According to an article on the Psychology Today website titled ‘Deconstructing the Fear of Rejection’, the fear of rejection is one of our deepest human fears. Biologically wired with a longing to belong, we fear being seen in a critical way. We’re anxious about the prospect of being cut off, demeaned, or isolated.
On a subconscious level, we may be afraid that rejection confirms our worst fear – perhaps that we’re unlovable or that we have little worth or value.
My personal fear of rejection comes into play whenever I have to ask for money!
As an Avon Rep and business owner it is important that I’m able to ask for and receive the money I’m owed. I was raised to never talk about money or ask for it, so I really have to jump over my own shadow. It gets worse, if someone doesn’t want to pay, I would rather give them the product and pay for it myself than confront them about it. That’s no way to do business, of course.
Most of us are great storytellers; so we make up stories that feed into our fear of rejection. For example… “If I can’t make the sale, I’ll lose my business. If I lose my business, I won’t be able to make ends meet, my spouse won’t be attracted to me any longer and my parents will have proof I can never amount to anything.”
We often assume prospects aren’t interested based on no realistic reason.
How To Overcome Your Fear Of Rejection
1 – Call your most appreciative client or customer (or Mom) and ask them why they do business with you.
2 – Have a positive attitude; it’s difficult to be afraid when you feel unstoppable.
3 – Shift the focus from the result you can’t control (a lost sale) to an action you can control (picking up the phone). If you make 25 calls a day for five days, you’ll get rid of your fear or rejection, and you’ll have success. I bet you will get at least one sale.
4 – Take a sales training and/or watch a motivational video, DVD, or listen to a podcast.
5 – Role-play your sales interview or recruiting process with a co-worker or partner. It’s great practice and will yield insights as to what you are doing well and how to improve.
6 – Take a mental day off every once in a while. Step away and regroup.
7 – Conquer the one thing you fear most. It’s incredibly powerful!
8 – Reach out to a mentor, up-line leader or trusted confidant and ask them for some positive encouragement.
Sometimes, all you can do to overcome fear is to put one foot in front of the other and take the next step.
